Overview
South Ham is an established neighbourhood with strong local identity and close links to Basingstoke town centre, the Leisure Park and local green spaces. Residents have told us they value the mix of homes, the allotments, Russell Howard Park and the everyday relationships that help people feel at home. Residents and the community have also told us that some places feel run-down or can feel unsafe. Speeding and traffic on Western Way are a concern, and the closure of the Beacon pub and Westside Community Centre has left a gap in places to meet. Residents have also said Russell Howard Park could offer more for different ages and interests, while protecting the green space people care about.
What could change in South Ham
For South Ham, the focus is on making the neighbourhood feel safer, greener and better connected, while improving the places people use every day. Future ideas could include improvements to Russell Howard Park, more seating and play, better walking and cycling links, and a new community hub that could support events, wellbeing, culture and local activities. Future ideas for South Ham will need to protect what residents value most, including green spaces, existing homes, street trees and community connections. We also know local facilities need to be useful, easy to access and open at times that work for people.

The shared principles have been created with Community Co-Design Associates to help keep future ideas focused on everyday life. That means thinking about homes that work for different needs, streets that feel safe and easy to use, green spaces for people and nature, local shops that feel cared for, and community spaces where people feel welcome.
