Overview
South Ham Extension sits between Buckskin and South Ham. It has a quieter residential feel, with homes, schools, parks and local shops close by. Residents have told us that Stratton Park, Russell Howard Park and Burnaby stores are important parts of daily life. Residents and the community have also told us that some routes can feel confusing or can feel unsafe, especially where there are back alleys, small paths or poor lighting. People have raised concerns about the upkeep of streets and homes, and about the area around Burnaby shops feeling unwelcoming at times. Many residents have also spoken about the loss of the Westside Community Centre and the need for more things to do, especially for young people.
What could change in South Ham Extension
For South Ham Extension, the focus is on making the area easier, safer and more pleasant to get around. Future ideas could include clearer walking and cycling routes, fewer hidden or confusing paths, better links between Buckskin and South Ham, safer routes to parks and schools, more greenery and improvements around Burnaby so it feels like a more welcoming local stop-off. There is also an opportunity to improve play and sports facilities and create more places where people can meet, rest and feel part of community life. As ideas develop, we will keep focusing on what residents' value, what needs to work better, and what feels right for the people who live here now and in the future.

The shared principles have been created with Community Co-Design Associates to help keep future ideas focused on everyday life. That means thinking about homes that work for different needs, streets that feel safe and easy to use, green spaces for people and nature, local shops that feel cared for, and community spaces where people feel welcome.
